So I'm gonna revive this blog as a music demos blog. So here's the first one. It's sort of about this bootlegger during prohibition who's in love with a loose woman but he knows he will never really be with it enough to love him back. But yet he still hides that hope in his heart. Damn!

Oh yeah, also - I'm really proud of this: the sound of the bass drum is me thumping on a milk carton. Milk always gives a good resonant thud.

I have been totally slacking off on this blog. Sorry. I have still been taking photographs, but have been lacking the time to get them from tiny camera screen to that of the vast wide internet.

Instead, I am focusing on three really major projects right now. These are:

1) Trying to get out to California for a week this summer to make an album with my good friend Shakey Graves.

2) Finally getting a VanLou Media website up to house these videos I've been shooting with Andrew all year.

3) Sorting through the many 'field recordings' I've made and acquired over the years. By this I mean that I've had a habit of cassette taping, filming or otherwise just trying to capture lots and lots of musicians that I've met here and there throughout my travels. I've been trying to make some sense of the archives. This is a project that will definitely have a home here on this site once it gets rolling and I am looking forward to sharing it with y'all.

Until then, however, it looks like isaacgillespie.com is taking a bit of a breeeather.

By the by, a couple of albums I've been really digging:

Bill Fox - Shelter From the Smoke. This is a really cool album that Brook played me on the road. This guy came out with two albums in the 90s I guess and then disappeared. But it sounds a lot like early Byrds, which I like!

Sundown Songs - Far From Home. These guys also played on Sunday. They hail from New Orleans and they're just awesome. As I was telling Jordan, they create a tight little pocket up onstage that you can peer into as audience. And absolutely everyone in the group can SING. They are coming back down through New York next Wed to play at the Jalopey for Feral Foster's Roots 'n Ruckus show. Odds are very good that I'll be there.

Hey Champions,

During tour I thought it'd be fun to bump up the posting to once a day in order to reflect the crazy cockamamie nature of the enterprise. And it was fun. It forced me to take a lot a lot of photos and I got to share them with you.

But now I'm back home in the NYC and I realize I'm not going to be able to keep up with that pace. So I'm going back to the old (Clinton-era) posting style of every other, or possibly every third day. It doesn't mean that I don't love you.

Also, I'm looking forward to experimenting with other forms of blogging. Stuff that's not just photos that I've taken. For example, here's a screenshot I took the other day of the nytimes.com front page:

It's something that I consider to be a pretty funny juxtaposition of ideas (Court Fight!) Originally I took this screenshot and e-mailed it to my family and closest friends but then I thought - Hey! Why not share it with you; an anonymous collection of acquaintances!

PS although we did get stranded up in bear country last week. we were driving on a mountain in Montana bear country and the GPS took us to a gravel road, then a dirt road, then a not-really-a-road where we got stuck in snow and spent the night. the next morning we walked the six miles back to the road where we found a very friendly fellow with a 4 wheel drive pickup truck to come and pull us out. the funny thing is that we all (Brook, Chloe & I) are very impressed with ourselves for surviving a night in the wild but everyone we tell the story to out here (in the West) is not impressed. I think it's sort of the equivalent of someone in New York getting lost on a subway train.

So Madison's show was at a fun lil house by the train tracks. We arrived at sunset and so I thought it'd be a perfect time to try out the red filter. Basically, it's just sticking a red sheet of plastic in front of the lens so that the picture looks like this:

but then when you take the colors out, it looks like this:

Since the blue in the sky reads as black, you get cool contrast with the clouds and stuff. And theoretically, digital cameras are sensitive to infrared light so we could be gettin' some of that, too.

Top Secret Hidden Wal Mart Store Photos!!! Classified! Classified!

So when we stopped into the Wal Mart to get an oil change, I got out my camera. Mostly because it's what I always do, but also because I saw this and wanted to photograph it. And I'm glad I did.

So then I was wandering around in the Super-Store thinking about how much open space there was. More than you mostly get in New York and certainly more than you would ever get indoors. So I thought it'd be cool to take some tele-photo shots and compress the space. Real cool landscape-like photos.

I got a couple of shots off, just calibrating what the conditions were like, when a man with a broom firmly instructed me that I was not to take photos in the Wal Mart. Whoa. Ok, that's cool. I half expected as much. So I pack it up and just start wandering around scoping the scene.

About two minutes later, as I was reading about the savings that Wal Mart affords over other stores, two plain clothes dicks (that stands for "detectives") accosted me and started an interrogation:

Dicks: Are you taking pictures of the Wal Mart?
Me: What? No!
Dicks: You weren't just taking pictures of the Wal Mart?
Me: I was, but I was told I wasn't allowed, so I stopped.
Dicks: Why were you taking pictures?
Me: Well I'm not from around here and they don't have Wal Marts where I come from.

This seemed to satisfy the dicks and they let me go with an O, Brother-Where-Art-Thou-style "Just don't take any more pictures of the Wal Mart!"

So it is with great pride, ladies and gentlemen, that I now reveal to you those few shots I popped off at the beginning! PS "Everybody Gets One" is what they used to say in school when someone didn't have their homework one day or is late to class. Sort of like you can't get it right all the time (the "one" in question is some sort of indiscretion in other words). I think it's a beautiful sentiment and endorse it without reservation.

So I got a polarizer filter just to keep on the front of the lens and absorb incidental scratches (like a car bumper!), but the COOL thing about a polarizer is that it totally reduces glare. Which means if you are at a museum, you can shoot THROUGH glass cases without getting the reflection of all the other stuff in the room. And if the cases are such that you can walk 360 around them, then you can photograph your friends reacting to art-things like this one:

(This place is slammin'. It's been there since 1817. It used to be situated on the waterfront and sailors would row right up to it and hop in for a drink. Now it's several hundred yards from the waterfront but still super-cool. I got a reasonably priced and absolutely delicious plate of mussels. None of these things are really worth talking about in a photoblog though, since I don't have pictures to show you)

So this weekend I was up at Sarah Lawrence College playing their 2nd Annual Folk Festival. Awesome show. Awesome audience. I was mostly too busy putting together my set and enjoying Big Tree and Emily Elbert but I did manage to grab a few shots of the always wonderful Megg Farrell

She had this one line in the sprinkles song (great opening couplet: "I love you so much. I love you and it sucks") where she says "it would be so perfect like Bush's assassination" which I was always sort of iffy about. I was glad to hear it got changed to "just like Obama's administration"

Eine Kleine Daylight Shooting

So this sunday saw me in the rare position of being up and out of the house during daylight (way different from night time shooting, btw). I was heading out to Bushwick to play banjo/guitar in some recording sessions for Aaron Invisible, a 17 year old songwriting phenom, and decided to bring my camera (I'll post those pictures later).

There was this super cool Sunday sale thing going on so I shot a few wide 'uns. Enjoy.

Last night was the debut show of the new hit rock band: Swamp Luck (http://www.myspace.com/swampluck )

After the PACKED OUT show we hit Hade Bade hookah bar (yes, mom. I know that a recent study found that hookah smoke is as damaging to the lungs as cigarette smoke, but I also think it wouldn't be too damaging to have three puffs of cigarette smoke in as many months).
